36.3 APARTMENT MAKEOVER

A rare opportunity for a Trinidadian interior designer to enjoy a virtual freehand to choose acclaimed iconic furniture and artwork that would be the envy of art aficionados anywhere. Upon entering the hallway of the apartment one is faced with an acrylic waterfall feature and from there on one is transported into a reality design museum. Original paintings by Peter Minshall, Eddie Bowen, Che Lovelace, Melissa Battersby and the late Wesley Kanhai. Among the original furniture pieces are Wassily Chairs by Marcel Breuer, marble dining room table by Eero Saarinen, leather dining room chairs by Mario Bellini, Twist side tables by Frank Gehry, Coconut chair by George Nelson and the white leather lounge chair and ottoman by Charles Eames.

Sam Bayne Design Consultant was faced with the challenge of a demanding client and a bare carcass of a 4,000 square foot apartment to fit out [save for the kitchen and bathroom finishes and appliances] but is thankful for the privilege. Sam had huge help from Annalisa Smith, a design and procurement assistant to put together this complex project over a couple of years. Doors and timber panel joinery by Chris Pillai of Pillai Woodworking.
